Brunfelsia grandiflora is a flowering shrub in the nightshade family. It is native to South America. In English it is known by the common names royal purple brunfelsia, kiss-me-quick, and yesterday-today-and-tomorrow. In Peru it is known by the Spanish-Quechua name chiricsanango.
“Chiric” literally translates as “itchy”, “tickling” or "cold". from the native Peruvian language of Quechua. Chiric Sanango is often ingested along with Ayahuasca in shamanic retreats in Peru and other South American countries.
In its native range it is used in traditional medicine to treat cold, fever, rheumatism, arthritis, leishmaniasis, pain, syphilis and other venereal diseases. It is one of the active plant additives contributing to the hallucinogenic effects of the South American drink Ayahuasca.
While in Peruvian Amazon shamanic traditions, Ayahuasca is considered to have a female energy and is referred to as a she, a kind mother or grandmother, Chiric Sanango having a male energy is referred to as a him, a caring wise father or grandfather.
Like Ayahuasca Chiric Sanango is a master plant, which physical, mental and spiritual effects are quite intense. It is recommended to work with it only under guidance of an experienced shaman with extensive training of this particular plant.
The physical temporary effects of Chiric Sanango intake may include itchiness, weakness, dizziness, chills or periodic waves of cold, tingling, electric vibrating sensations, disorientation, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, tremors, vertigo, lack of coordination and motor skills. This is generally followed by sensations of ecstatic relief, calmness and release of repressed emotions. The physical effects are viewed not as discomfort but as part of the process of the ongoing and following spiritual changes.
Chiric Sanango plant is reported to open the gates toward emotional healing, higher level of self-esteem, better understanding of the connection between all living things, increased mental clarity. It is considered to be a very powerful ally, teacher, healer and protector.
